Disaster Recovery as a Service, DRaaS

What is Disaster Recovery as a Service, DRaaS?

Disaster Recovery as a Service, DRaaS is an all-inclusive third-party service that uses cloud and on-premise resources to back up vital data and applications, as well as providing system failover to a secondary infrastructure. DRaaS replicates your production data/infrastructure and all its processes onto a recovery infrastructure so that you can transition to a backup environment flawlessly, allowing business services to continue as usual in case of disaster.

DRaaS is also recognized as business continuity as a service (BCaaS). DRaaS is frequently presented in conjunction with a disaster recovery plan (DRP) and business continuity plan (BCP).

RaaS architecture

RaaS architecture models differ based on the location of the primary or source production application or data.

• To-cloud RaaS: In this case, the source application is in the user's primary private datacenter and the cloud is being used as a recovery target.

• In-cloud RaaS: In this case, both the source and recovery sites are in the cloud.

• From-cloud RaaS: In this case, the primary data is in the cloud and the recovery target site is a private datacenter.

Market Size

The disaster recovery-as-a-service (DRaaS) market size will rise by USD 9.35 billion during 2019-2022. The disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) market is projected to register a CAGR of 12% over the forecast period (2019 – 2024). The DRaaS market has been gaining momentum due to the better functionality of the increasing number of small and medium enterprises. A significant share of the market is accounted for by the hybrid configuration (including both physical and cloud-based servers) due to the increased flexibility of cloud services by cloud service providers, such as AWS and Microsoft.

BaaS Vs. DRaaS

Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) and Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS/RaaS) represent two major models ensuring high availability for the enterprise.

Backup-as-a-Service, BaaS: A third-party service provider backs up corporate data to an off-site storage system. Instead of handling backup on-premises with an IT department, maintenance and management are offloaded to the provider. Whereas in Disaster Recovery as a Service, DRaaS: a third-party service provider hosts and constantly replicates servers to enable failover in the event of a catastrophe. This means both data and infrastructure are safe.

Disaster Threats

Disaster Threats that Every Business Faces:

Cyber threats

Cyber threats are enormous. There is always an ongoing threat of viruses, ransomware, spyware, malware, and hackers. These threats could take down a business operation. Today’s business leader should be asked, “Can their business survive data loss?”

Natural Disasters

Earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, fire, tornadoes, and whatever else the world can throw at us. The question to ask business leaders is, “Can my business survive if hit with a natural disaster?” They are a possible threat.

Human Error

Intentional or unintentional, humans make mistakes. There are plenty of examples of dissatisfied employees who have destroyed data. Being thoughtful of how data theft or malintent affects businesses allows leaders to defend data and decrease the danger of data loss due to human action.
